Trazel is short for tree Hazel. This is a member of the Betulaceae family and native to
Tazel is an easily grown tree that succeeds in most soils but prefers a loamy, alkaline soil. It requires a moist soil but it is very drought resistant once established and will stand hard frosts when dormant.
In spring Trazel is covert in yellow catkins. The nuts are like cob nuts and project out of the end of the green bract. They ripen and fall in mid to late autumn. Nuts kept whole (not shelled) in a cool place will store for at least 12 months. They are eaten raw or cooked and Hazelnut oil edible oil also obtained from them. Wood is used for furniture.
The tree is propagated from seed. The seeds should be stratified or sown immediately into their nursery as viability is quite short. Plant them out into their permanent position in early summer. Seedlings are usually budded because of variability. Budded trazel nut trees will bear in 4 to 5 years.
