Rose Apple - syzygium jambos

The Rose Apple is an evergreen attractive fruit tree from South East Asia. It is a hardy tree specimen with very few insect problems that produces vividly colored fruits, delicately sweet.

The rose apple is a small 7 to 10 meters evergreen fruit tree from South-East Asia. There are between four and five hundred species, all with glossy foliage and often with attractive pink colored new growth. The flowers are large, showy creamy-white or yellowish-white that adds to the tree’s ornamental beauty. They are followed by small, round to oval vividly colored fruits, delicately sweet with a rosewater taste. Fruits are eaten raw or used to make jams, jellies and syrup to be used as a sauce or to flavor drinks. The fruit bruise easily and is highly perishable.

The rose apple is a hardy specimen growing well in the warm humid tropics and in the drier, cooler subtropical areas. They are not resistant to frost, at least when young. The tree prefers a deep well drained soil but can do well in sandy no so rich soils. Most rose apple trees are propagated from seeds but also by air-layering. The tree likes full sun and benefits from top pruning. There are male and female trees. The apple rose tree has very few insect problems. However, it is prone to leaf spot and anthracnose.
