Trazel - corylus colurna

Posted by goodadmin

by steve stamos

Trazel is short for tree Hazel. This is a member of the Betulaceae family and native to Turkey. It has deep green heavy textured leaves and a coarse, exfoliating bark. Naturally occurs through the temperate forests of north Turkey, Iran and the Balkans. C. colurna, is a large attractive tree and the only hazel tree that grows on a single trunk. It can grow up to 15 meters high and has a shallow spreading crown. The trunk is gray and corky.

Tazel is an easily grown tree that succeeds in most soils but prefers a loamy, alkaline soil. It requires a moist soil but it is very drought resistant once established and will stand hard frosts when dormant.

In spring Trazel is covert in yellow catkins. The nuts are like cob nuts and project out of the end of the green bract. They ripen and fall in mid to late autumn. Nuts kept whole (not shelled) in a cool place will store for at least 12 months. They are eaten raw or cooked and Hazelnut oil edible oil also obtained from them. Wood is used for furniture.

The tree is propagated from seed. The seeds should be stratified or sown immediately into their nursery as viability is quite short. Plant them out into their permanent position in early summer. Seedlings are usually budded because of variability. Budded trazel nut trees will bear in 4 to 5 years.

Barbados Cherry

Posted by goodadmin

by steve stamos

The Barbados cherry is a small, 3-4m, evergreen fruit tree from Central America. A very decorative fruit tree specimen with its dense cover of glossy, dark green leaves with a pink tinge when new. The beautiful pink-purple flowers turn into ripe bright red, juicy, thin-skinned, cherry-like fruits, 2.5cm in diameter within weeks. The tree will flower and fruit two or three times a year.

Taste of the fruit varies from acid to sweet depending upon variety. Rainfall greatly increases the quantity and size of fruit during the setting and developing period. However, excessive rain may cause splitting of fruit that is almost ripe. The fruit is very high in vitamin C, containing twenty to fifty times more vitamin than orange juice. The fruit is used as a table fruit, for drinks, jams, preserves and wine. The fresh fruit has a shot keeping life and should be used as soon as possible after harvest.

The tree likes a frost free site, good drainage and moisture during flowering. Fertilize in early spring and through summer using well rotted animal manure mixed with mulch and prune in autumn thinning growth at the top to promote side branching. Barbados cherry can be propagated by hardwood cuttings or can be budded onto seedlings. Plants should begin to bear in their second year from planting out. Pests include scale insects and nematodes in poor soils. No major disease affects fruit production.

Chilean coconut - jabaea spectabilis

Posted by goodadmin

by steve stamos

One of the great specimens of nut trees when full grown. It grows slowly and reaches a height up to 15m and a girth of 1.5m but only after 100 years. Its common name ‘Wine Palm’ is derived from the fact that the trunk is full of sweet honey like syrup that can be fermented into wine. A single trunk may bleed to produce up to 400 liters of wine. However, you will have to kill the tree to do so

The Chilean coconut is an evergreen, frost tender and in leaf all year round. It produces flowers that they are either female or male with both sexes found on the same tree. The flower spadix may bled daily for up to one month and around 300 liters of sap can be collected from a 20 year old tree. It can then be boiled down to produce palm sugar or fermented into wine.

The tree will produce several bunches, each containing several hundred yellow, peach like fruit each with a miniature coconut inside, 2.5-5cm in diameter. The seed is eaten row or cooked and it has a pleasant coconut flavor. Nuts should be kept cool and damp. They should not allow drying or they will loose much of their flavor freshness and sweetness. The nuts fall in autumn.

The tree is propagated from seeds. They should be sown immediately after fallen to the ground. Each nut has three eyes and the one furthest apart from the other two should be facing downwards. It takes approximately 6 months for the nut to germinate. It will take the tree usually 15 years to commence bearing.
